White-tailed Trogon
Trogon viridis

White-tailed Trogon is one of several trogon species readily found in the Canal area of Panama, and one with a rather extensive range. I found my first member of this species near the Asa Wright Nature Centre in Trinidad, rather uncharacteristically perched on a wire. It was my very first trogon of any kind. The male White-tailed Trogon below was filmed on Pipeline Road in July of 2005. Diana Manetz, who claims not to be a birder, used her sharp eyes to pick out this perched bird at long range.

A male White-tailed Trogon engages in the family's typical head-cocking behavior.
