Volcano Hummingbird
Selasphorus flammula

Volcano Hummingbird is found only at the highest elevations of Costa Rica and Panama. It shares this habitat with the very similar Scintillant Hummingbird (s. scintilla, which can present i.d. problems. I found both species in August of 2005 at and on my hike to El Respingo, at the southern end of the Sendero Los Quetzales in western Panama. The identification of the bird pictured below was pretty straightforward; the dull black gorget tells me that this bird is a male Volcano Hummingbird. My understanding is that the gorget of Volcano Hummingbirds gets brighter and redder towards the northern and western end of its range, which would make it somewhat more difficult to distinguish the two species.
