Turkey Vulture
Cathartes aura

Both Black and Turkey Vultures are extremely common in Panama, the latter especially in migration, when flocks numbering in the thousands may be seen soaring above the isthmus. Both species seem to be expanding their range, Turkey southward and Black northward, as they are perfectly designed to take advantage of an abundance of carrion created by both ranching and automotive traffic. I've generally found Turkey Vulture harder to observe at close range than Black, so I was delighted to find the bird pictured below, perched on a low branch at Punta Burica in May of 2006.

A good look at the rather grotesque Turkey Vulture.
