Squirrel Cuckoo
Piaya cayana

My first look at the beautiful Squirrel Cuckoo was in Trinidad, the bird high in a tree along the entrance road to the Asa Wright Nature Centre. Since then, I have seen it multiple times in Panama- I have certainly seen this bird more often than any of the North American native cuckoos. The bird pictured below was one of a small flock observed from the viewing platform at Panama's Canopy Tower in September, 2004.

A striking, enormous Squirrel Cuckoo at Panama's Canopy Tower.

The image below is not particularly remarkable, but I love the perspective on the bird's huge tail- what a wonderful and striking creature is the Squirrel Cuckoo!

A nice look at the extremely long tail of the Squirrel Cuckoo.
