| Sooty-capped Bush-Tanager is a relatively common resident of the highlands of Costa Rica and Panama, in these locales replacing the Common Bush-Tanager of lower elevations. I observed this species on several occasions on my tour of western Panama in July of 2005, but found it to be a generally elusive and easily-spooked bird. So I was delighted to get a bead on the bird pictured below, filmed below El Respingo on the western side of the Sendero Los Quetzales. |
| On my return visit to the Sendero Los Quetzales in May of 2006 I found Sooty-capped Bush-Tanager to be the most common bird on the trail. I have 6 words for this species: easy to see, difficult to film. With some effort I managed to collect a bit of footage of the bird below; I was unable to determine if the leaf in its bill was being collected for nest-building or if the bird was foliage-gleaning in search of insects. |
