Sharp-shinned Hawk
Accipiter striatus

I admit to having some difficulty distinguishing accipiters, especially juvenilles, but occasionally I get a close-range look that makes identification relatively easy. One such occasion was at the Sweetwater Wetlands, in Tucson, Arizona, in July, 2003. A pair of young Sharp-shinned Hawks was terrorizing the passerines in the area, and I caught the image below of a windblown bird.

Another such fortunate occasion was during my trip to Texas' lower Rio Grande Valley in December, 2004. I was searching (in vain) for a Gray-crowned Yellowthroat at Sabal Palm Audubon Sanctuary
