Scale-crested Pygmy-Tyrant
Lophotriccus pileatus

Scale-crested Pygmy-Tyrant is one of the smallest passerines (perching birds) in the world; I believe that only a couple of its congeners are more diminutive. It is a bird of foothills and lower highlands, and as such is most easily found in central Panama in the El Valle area. In July of 2005 I had the opportunity to visit the relatively new birding site at Altos de Maria, east of El Valle. There we found a pair of very energetic Scale-crested Pygmy-Tyrants, so dedicated to a particular stand of trees that I must assume they were on breeding territory. I was patient enough to capture the modest image of this tiny bird presented below; based on the brownish head and very pale underparts, I believe this individual to be either a female or an immature male.

A decent image of the hard-to-get Scale-crested Pygmy-Tyrant.
