My first look at an Orange-billed Nightingale-Thrush was exactly what I expected;
a brief look at a small portion of a mostly hidden, boldly-vocalizing bird. The individual in
question was found near the Canopy Lodge in El Valle, Panama, with some help from Michael Harvey, in July of 2005.
Little did I know that I was soon heading into a land where nightingale-thrushes roamed freely, where the effort
I had put in a couple of weeks before seemed like a waste of time. In western Panama, at the lovely botanical garden, Mi
Jardin es su Jardin in Boquete, I happened upon the very gracious Orange-billed Nightingale-Thrush pictured below.
I viewed this bird at length on two more visits to the garden. The Western Highlands also gave me my first looks at
Black-billed and Ruddy-capped Nightingale-Thrushes; the region is rich with interesting high-elevation thrush species.
Forgive the horizontal barring on the image below; my video camera reacted quite negatively to the omnipresent humid conditions in the region.
