Mourning Dove
Zenaida macroura

I often find myself so focused on finding and observing the rare, or at least less common birds, that I forget to admire the fine qualities of the birds I see almost everyday. Mourning Dove is one such bird; it is quite pretty and seemingly gentle, and somehow remains common in the face of hoardes of non-native Rock Pigeons. I paused to admire, and film, the bird below in my local Inwood Hill Park in April of 2005.

In May of 2005 my father and I stumbled across the lovely juvenille Mourning Dove pictured below; in another place, I might have confused the scaly bird with a Common Ground-Dove, not really a consideration in New York City. This illustrates another reason to carefully observe locally common birds- the opportunity to study less-than-familiar molts and plumages.
