Mottled Duck is a rather plain species of the American southeast, easily confused with the even more bland, and more widespread,
female Mallard; Mottled Duck is best distinguished by a duller crown and an unmarked yellow bill (a distinction that is more blurred in the west, where
the "Mexican" Mallard more closely matches the Mottled Duck). I found this Mottled Duck in a small sweampy area across from my hotel in Bonita Springs, Florida, in June
of 2005. The bird was also gracious enough to float next to a handsome Great Egret, as pictured in the picture at bottom.
