Magnificent Hummingbird
Eugenes fulgens

Magnificent Hummingbird is a rather large and plainly-plumaged hummingbird, one whose range extends from the southwestern United States (it's a sought-after specialty of southeastern Arizona) to western Panama. I found this species on both sides of Volcan Barú, but saw it best at the feeders surrounding the Los Quetzales cabins in Guadalupe. The hummingbirds there were quite acclimated to human presence, and the Magnificent Hummingbirds readily drank nectar from the cupped hand of Mariano, the gentle caretaker of the cabins. This male was filmed above Guadalupe in late July of 2005.
