Laughing Falcon
Herpototheres cachinnans

My first Laughing Falcon was a somewhat distant bird seen from the Canopy Tower, but my luck would improve considerably on the Burica Peninsula. On my first morning at Mono Feliz, I heard the rhythmic, resonant 'HA-ha' calls of a pair of Laughing Falcons, but could not locate the birds (the species also employs a call that sounds for all the world like maniacal laughter). Two days later, as I enjoyed an afternoon hike in the lightly-forested area on the ridge above Mono Feliz, and paused to, ahem, answer the call of nature. I looked up see the beautiful Laughing Falcon pictured at right, perched at eye-level not 30' away from me. I zipped up and collected a minute or two of fine footage before the bird flew off, the latest addition to my now almost legendary list of 'Piss Birds'! I was struck by the very soft and fluffy appearance of this species' clean white feathers, and have included several stills below from slightly different angles.
