Horned Grebe
Podiceps auritus

Horned Grebe is a fairly common wintering bird throughout the coastal United States; I have seen them by the dozens in both oceans. As my typical view of this species is of tiny birds well-offshore in choppy waters, I was delighted to have the opportunity to film the bird below in relatively calm and close waters off Alki Beach, in West Seattle, Washington, in January of 2006.
