Green Violet-Ear
Colibri thalassinus

Green Violet-ear is one of the more beautiful neotropical hummingbird species; I found this specimen conveniently working the flowers outside the main lodge of Los Quetzales, in Guadalupe, in the western highlands of Panama. Green Violet-Ear has a pretty remarkable record of extralimital forays into the continental United States, with a sighting or two even on the east coast! By the by, this species' generic name, colibri, is the most commonly used Spanish word for "hummingbird".
