Green Heron
Butorides virescens

I've enjoyed many wonderful looks at Green Heron in my life- there is a regular nesting site easily viewed in New York's Central Park- but everytime the species seems close enough to touch, I seem to be without my camera. This situation changed on my (mostly) business trip to Florida in June of 2005, when I encountered several Green Herons at close range, uttering utterly absurd vocalizations. I caught this territorial bird at the Shark Valley access to Everglades National Park.

Finally, a good shot of the handsome Green Heron.
