Great Potoo
Nyctibus grandis

Potoos are among the most unusual neotropic birds- these large nightjars are perfectly designed for diurnal camouflage- they place themselves at the top of a dead tree trunk or snag, and assume a posture that makes them look like an extension of the branch. The bird pictured below was a wonderful treat, staked out within close range of the viewing platform at Panama's Canopy Tower, in August, 2003. The next year we found a bird on a night trip, and watched it fly in the light of our torches- it is a huge bird, with the wingspan of a mid-sized owl!
