Great Blue Heron
Ardea herodias

I've seen several thousand magnificent Great Blue Herons in my lifetime- I remember, years ago, finding a rookery north of Oneonta, New York- but I seem to rarely get close enough for a photo op. The bird pictured here was a nice exception, strikingly backlit in Van Cortlandt Park, The Bronx, NY, as I participated in a Christmas Bird Count in January of 2004.

A slightly obscured, but close range, look at a Great Blue Heron.

I found the Great Blue Heron below along the entrance road to the Hayton Preserve, on Fir Island in northwestern Washington State, in January of 2006. I used my car as a blind, and filmed this bird at close range as it captured some sort of eel or snake, and swallowed it whole. The image below was captured as the bird was in the process of swallowing.
