Great Antshrike
Taraba major

Great Antshrike is one of the more striking antbirds found in Panama, although one that can be difficult to find. The species is rather local in its distribution, although as a whole its range extends through much of the neotropics. I first saw Great Antshrike in Trinidad, but have found it only twice on 3 trips to Panama. The male pictured below was found along a path above the Canopy Lodge in El Valle, in July, 2005. A male and female were vocalizing and hopping about in a section of thick undergrowth, typical habitat for the species. With some patience we enjoyed outstanding looks. The birds were present in the same spot for several days, leading me to guess that they were on breeding territory.

A stunning male Great Antshrike.
