In January of 2005, I spent a few days in Santa Monica, California, on a business trip, and enjoyed a brief but fruitful afternoon
of birding along the local beach. As I sorted through video from the trip, I received an unexpected bonus, retroactively identifying a
wintering Glaucous-winged Gull, as pictured below. in much of its breeding range, notably in the Pacific Northwest, this species hybridizes
regularly with Western Gull (referred to as "Olympic Gull"), so my sightings of pure Glaucous-wingeds have been few and far between. Characters that distinguish
this large gull are the brown streaks on the neck, and the pale wingtips, matching the color of the mantle.
