Garden Emerald
Chlorostilbon assimilis

Garden Emerald is somewhat common in its rather limited range in Costa Rica and Panama. Its numbers seem to be increasing in the Panamanian foothills; this species is well-adapted to gardens and partially cleared areas. The male Garden Emerald pictured below was filmed at the Canopy Lodge in El Valle in May of 2006, where it faithfully visited a small flowering bush near a bridge, providing a little distance between it and the aggressive Snowy-bellied Hummingbirds that dominated the rest of the garden.

A decent look at a handsome male Garden Emerald.
