Common Nighthawk
Chordeiles minor

On my May 2006 trip to central Panama, I visited the cloud forests of Altos del Maria in the company of my father, Canopy Lodge guide Tino Sanchez, and a Panamanian friend, Armodio. We stopped briefly at a small visitor's center, where Armodio found this roosting nightjar, which we identified as a common Nighthawk. Besides our expectations for the region, this is a tough i.d., especially given the limited view of this photo. This bird is more densely barred below than one would expect for Lesser Nighthawk, and Lesser would also be cleaner gray on the back. Common Nighthawk is the most likely nighthawk to be found in the foothills of Panama suring the breeding season; Lesser is more of a lowland species.

A nice find, a roosting Common Nighthawk.
