Chestnut-mandibled Toucan
Ramphastos swainsonii

One of my favorite images- a nice portrait of a Chestnut-mandibled Toucan.

Chestnut-mandibled Toucan was the first member of the family I ever saw at really close range; the bird pictured here was absurdly near the viewing platform atop Panama's Canopy Tower. The toucans favor a cecropia tree next to the Tower, and a combination of great light, a large, slow-moving bird, and the fact that I was using a tripod (for once!), made for a rare set of pictures that are crystal-clear even at a large image size.

A nice full-body image of a Chestnut-mandibled Toucan, with the genus' characteristic red rump in view.

A very tight close-up of a Chestnut-mandibled Toucan.

The image below was captured in July of 2005, during a month-long visit to Panama. Chestnut-mandibled was this time perhaps the least abundant of the 3 toucan species at the Tower, but was still seen quite often. At bottom is yet another nice look from my May, 2006 trip.

Another nice profile of a Chestnut-mandibled Toucan.
