Borad-winged Hawk is a rather widespread breeder in North America, but there it is most typically seen soaring overhead. This species is an abundant migrant in the skies over Panama
(generally in October), and a number of individuals stay for the northern winter (considered summer in Panama, as it the dry season). Ridgely aptly describes the wintering birds as "sluggish";
the two individuals I found at Altos del Maria, Panamá Province, in Janaury of 2007 were both rather tame. The bird pictured above and below
quite graciously posed for several minutes, even preening and revealing a patch of fluffy feathers that no doubt were soon to molt.
