Thousands of this handsome goose species flock to the coastal waters around southern New York every winter, yet I've never managed to catch much more than distant video. Most people don't know this bird exists- they take a glance and dismiss it as a Canada Goose. Their loss! The bird pictured below was one of hundreds at Point Lookout on Long Island, New York, in January of 2004.
