Blue Dacnis
Dacnis cayana

Blue Dacnis is one of the most stunning birds I have enjoyed on my several trips to Panama. I had the good fortune to find this male at very close range in bushes in front of the Canopy Tower, but my general experience with this species has been to find it high it the treetops with mixed species fruit-eating flocks. I will never forget the first time I saw this species below the canopy: I was birding the wonderful Parque Metropolitano in Panama City one morning, and enjoying a small mixed flock in a tree only a few feet from me. A male Blue Dacnis came in to the tree, and stuck around for some time, hopping about in a most agitated state. I was bewildered at this seemingly uncharacteristic behavior, until I thought about my attire on the day; I was wearing a lime green shirt and a bright blue bandana. My "plumage" matched almost exactly the colors of a female Blue Dacnis! Add this to the list of Cheap Birders' Tricks....
