Black-and-yellow Silky-Flycatcher
Phainoptila Melanoxantha

Blacl-and-yellow Silky-Flycatcher is a fairly common resident of forests at the highest elevations in western Panama. I observed this species on numerous occasions during my July, 2005 stay at the Los Quetzales cabins above Guadalupe. This species generally stays well belwo the canopy, and behaves more like a thrush or sparrow than a flycatcher, moving about quite energetically. The species' call note sounds quite similar to that of a Northern cardinal, which helped me get a bead on it on multiple occasions.
