Barrow's Goldeneye
Bucephala islandica

The handsome Barrow's Goldeneye breeds in the northwestern United States and Canada, and during the winter months one or two birds can usually be found somewhere in coastal New York. It is considerably more abundant on the west coast, where, in January of 2006, I observed dozens of this species off Alki Beach in Seattle, Washington. The flocks generally stayed close to shore, but upon my approach either dove or swam away from me, so the individual pictured below was the only bird I filmed in profile.
