Barn Owl
Tyto alba

Barn Owl is perhaps the most cosmopolitan of owls, and in my own experience, I have observed this species in Washington State, New York City, and the island of St. Maarten in the Caribbean. The bird pictured below hung around for a while in New York's Central Park, where I filmed it in January of 2004. The owl was puffed up in the face of a bitterly cold day, with a wind chill well below zero.

A beautiful Barn Owl survives a cold New York day.
