American Coots, related to the much more secretive rails, are a familiar and charming denizen of wetlands throughout much of the United States. The bird pictured below, at Sweetwater Wetlands in Tucson, Arizona, had the honor of being the very first bird I ever captured on video!

The bird below was found at the Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on a quick stop (mostly to find my first newly-split Cackling Goose) in late December, 2004.
