Acorn Woodpecker
Melanerpes formicivorus

Acorn Woodpecker is one of the most comical-looking creatures in all the world; the clown-face of this wonderful bird seems to indicate that it's gone goofy from banging its head against trees. Acorn Woodpecker can be quite gregarious, as when I captured these images in Madera Canyon, Arizona, in July of 2003.
