SIGHTINGS Data of: Kenneth Allaire Panama- Hummingbirds From 7-8-05 to 8-3-05 (N.B.: the letter "F" preceding the species' name indicates that I saw this bird for the first time on this trip.) F White-tipped Sicklebill Eutoxeres aquila Seen once, feeding on a heliconia in the La Rica area. F Band-tailed Barbthroat Threnetes ruckeri Found outside the cabin at La Rica- possibly overlooked previously, as most of the hermit-types were found in the area. Green Hermit Phaethornis guy Seen a couple of times in the El Valle area. Western Long-tailed Hermit Phaethornis longirostris A striking occasional visitor to the Canopy Tower's feeders, and seen quite regularly around La Rica. Stripe-throated Hermit Phaethornis striigularis This was a difficult bird in the Canal area, but was observed quite easily at the feeders at Chorro Macho F Green-fronted Lancebill Doryfera ludovicae I had the splendid luck to see this species on my last night in Guadalupe, as it braved the wrath of territorial Violet Sabrewings to pay brief visits to the feeder outside my cabin. F Violet Sabrewing Campylopterus hemileucurus First found in Boquete, and then the dominant species in the Guadalupe area. Apparently a small population has since been found in the Altos de Maria area (pers.comm.). White-necked Jacobin Florisuga mellivora On past trips this species ruled the Canopy Tower feeders, but it seems to be an altitudinal migrant, and was absent there this July. It was common in El Valle, and I enjoyed watching one flycatch over the stream near my cabin in La Rica. F Green Violet-ear Colibri thalassinus A highlands species, with my best looks near the lodge in Guadalupe. F Violet-headed Hummingbird Klais guimeti We couldn't get a bead on this species in El Valle, but I got redemption in multiple sightings on the trail to Cerro Tute, above Santa Fe. F Rufous-crested Coquette Lophornis delattrei We delighted in one fleeting visit by this tiny, stunning creature to the flowers around our cabana in El Valle. It has recently been fairly reliable in the area. F Green Thorntail Discosura conversii I also missed this bird on the path to Cerro Gaital, but again got a second chance on my hike to Cerro Tute F Garden Emerald Chlorostilbon assimilis A very accomodating bird hovered within a few feet on Cara Iguana, in El Valle. F White-tailed Emerald Elvira chionura Time did not permit a hike to the highest points of Cerro Gaital to find this species, but I lucked into great looks at Finca Hartmann, most of which lies at similar elevations. F Stripe-tailed Hummingbird Eupherusa eximia This species seemed to be somewhat common at the multiple feeders at the upper cabins of Los Quetzales, but only occasional faced the wrath of the Sabrewing at my well-guarded pair. Violet-crowned Woodnymph Thalurania colombica This species is common in the El Valle area, and was found west to Santa Fe. Males are easy to distinguish, but I have good footage of several females/juvenilles that demonstrate a variable plumage that demands more extensive treatment in field guides. Violet-bellied Hummingbird Damophila julie A regular at the Canopy Tower's feeders. Rufous-tailed Hummingbird Amazilia tzacatl Found on forest edges throughout the country. Blue-chested Hummingbird Polyerata amabilis Common at the Canopy Tower, and found west to La Rica- an aggressive defender of feeders. Snowy-bellied Hummingbird Saucerottia edward A cosmopolitan species, found from the feeders at the Canopy Tower to evergreen trees in Guadalupe to botanical gardens in Boquete. F Snowcap Microchera albocoronata I reaped the benefits of recent discovery, as we enjoyed fine looks at an immature male at Altos de Maria. White-vented Plumeleteer Chalybura buffonii Another common bird at the Canopy Tower F Bronze-tailed Plumeleteer Chalybura urochrysia Found at the Chorro Macho feeders and at Altos de Maria- I discover that the pale lower mandible is the most reliable field mark. F White-throated Mountain-gem Lampornis castaneoventris I enjoyed great looks at both genders at multiple highland locations. F Purple-throated Mountain-gem Lampornis calolaema I'm told that this species can be quite abundant at higher elevations in Costa Rica, but in Panama my only look was at a perched bird at Altos de Maria. Green-crowned Brilliant Heliodoxa jacula Another in a wave of hummingbirds on Cerro Gaital. Magnificent Hummingbird Eugenes fulgens This species is relatively common in the highlands- seen at several locations. Purple-crowned Fairy Heliothryx barroti I found this striking bird in both El Valle and La Rica. F Long-billed Starthroat Heliomaster longirostris Danilo Rodriguez found this perched bird on Cara Iguana in El Valle, and we pulled out the scope for quick looks in the rain. F Scintillant Hummingbird Selasphorus scintilla I found several of these on my hike to El Respingo, and even picked out a female, which is distinguished from the following species by its barely-speckled throat and clean white underside. F Volcano Hummingbird Selasphorus flammula I collected video of this rather plain bird as it worked some flowers near the guard house at El Respingo. 31 SPECIES
